You’ve spent weeks planning the outfits. You’ve bribed the kids, double-checked the weather, and probably lost a little bit of sleep wondering if everyone will behave. By the time you arrive at your photo session, your stress levels are through the roof because you want everything to be absolutely picture-perfect.
But as a photographer, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I don’t want perfection. I want you.
If I could sit down with every mom before she steps in front of my camera, here is what I would tell her to take the pressure off and make the experience truly beautiful.
1. Let Go of the "Perfect" Expectation
We’ve all seen those hyper-curated, stiffly posed photos where every hair is in place and everyone is staring blankly at the camera with plastered-on smiles. But let’s be honest—does that actually reflect the beautiful, messy, wonderful reality of your daily life?
When you fight too hard for perfection, you miss out on the magic. The best images don’t come from rigid posing; they come from life happening naturally.
2. We Want "Real," Not Fake
Your family has a unique rhythm—a specific way your toddler leans into your shoulder, the genuine, unforced laugh your partner gives when you tease them, or the chaotic, beautiful energy of your kids just being themselves.
My goal isn’t to create a fake, sanitized version of your family for a magazine cover. I want to capture images that scream you. Years from now, you won’t look back at a stiff, forced photo and feel the emotion of this chapter. But you will look at an image of your child laughing genuinely or holding your hand, and you’ll instantly be transported back to this exact moment in time.
3. Trust the Process (and the Movement)
If your kids are running around, don't panic. If your hair blows in the wind, let it. Instead of forcing everyone into hard, uncomfortable poses, I love to let families fall into positions naturally and make tiny micro-adjustments along the way.
Movement brings photos to life. Tickle your kids. Whisper something funny to your partner. Hug each other tightly. When you focus on interacting with the people you love instead of looking at the lens, the stress melts away, and the real magic happens.
4. You Don't Have to Manage It All
Mom, you are off the clock during our session. You don’t need to discipline, you don’t need to direct, and you don’t need to worry if someone isn't looking perfectly at the camera. Leave that to me! Your only job is to be present, breathe, and enjoy your family.
Take a deep breath. Your family is beautiful exactly as they are right now—flaws, chaos, real moments, and all. Let’s capture that.
